TPV Deodorizer

Product Introduction

This product is a high-performance reactive deodorizer developed specifically for TPV (Thermoplastic Vulcanizate, EPDM/PP system) and its modified blends. During the twin-screw dynamic vulcanization of TPV (typically 180°C-220°C), the material forms a complex "sea-island" two-phase microstructure (PP as the continuous sea phase, EPDM particles as the dispersed island phase). This complex morphology results in a dual source of odors: the EPDM rubber island phase releases extremely pungent sulfur/nitrogen compounds and polysulfide odors during curing (especially with phenolic resin or peroxide systems); simultaneously, the PP plastic sea phase undergoes thermo-oxidative degradation under high shear, emitting sour-smelling low-molecular VOCs (aldehydes, ketones). Traditional single-action physical adsorbents not only fail to address this dual-phase odor but inevitably migrate and precipitate heavily on the cooled TPV surface due to polar repulsion, forming disastrous white frost (blooming).

To thoroughly conquer this century-old industry pain point, this product pioneers a "sea-island dual-phase precision guidance and in-situ thermodynamic anchoring" purification technology. During dynamic vulcanization, targeting the rubber "island phase," highly active macromolecular metal chelates penetrate the interface to precisely capture and deadlock curing byproducts. Targeting the plastic "sea phase," an embedded hydrophobic solid-acid microenvironment catalytically cracks the degradation-produced small-molecule odors in place. Even more disruptively, the formula innovatively introduces a macromolecular compatible isolation skeleton completely homologous to the TPV continuous phase. In the extrusion melt, the polar end of this skeleton tightly grips the active deodorizing reactants, while its ultra-long non-polar chain perfectly dissolves and co-crystallizes with the PP sea phase. This microscopic anchoring mechanism thermodynamically severs the migration channel for polar substances, achieving a dramatic plunge in overall VOC emissions. It guarantees absolutely no oil bleeding or whitening, does not interfere with the crosslinking density or elasticity of EPDM particles, and perfectly enables automotive seals and cable jackets to meet the strictest environmental sensory standards.

White to slightly yellow, free-flowing ultra-fine powder

Deodorizing Principle

  • Targeted Chelation Deadlock for Rubber Island Phase: For dispersed EPDM particles, special organometallic macromolecules melt at processing temperatures. Their empty orbitals actively penetrate the phase interface, specifically capturing sulfur and amine odors, converting them into extremely stable cyclic chelates permanently locked in the cross-linked network.
  • Catalytic Cracking for Plastic Sea Phase: For small-molecule pungent aldehydes/ketones generated by PP thermal degradation, a hydrophobic catalytic bed with specific 3D channels and solid-acid sites is utilized. Activated in the high-temp melt, it acts like molecular scissors, catalytically cracking and rearranging these organics into odorless gases easily removed by the vacuum vent, or stable inert macromolecules.
  • In-situ Homologous Anchoring (Anti-Blooming): To completely solve the blooming of polar substances in non-polar elastomers, the active core is wrapped with a homologous polyolefin compatibilizer containing highly polar reactive ends. During extrusion, the polar ends bite into the active powder, while the non-polar long chains deeply entangle and co-crystallize with the continuous plastic matrix, thermodynamically deadlocking the deodorizer inside.
  • Nanoscale Dry-Blend Isolation (Anti-Bubbles): TPV is extremely sensitive to moisture. The formula uses nanoscale hydrophobic silica as a base isolation. Absolutely water-free, it provides excellent moisture resistance and flowability, ensuring the dry-blended powder disperses like fluid, achieving zero white spots and zero micro-bubbles at the extrusion inlet.

Application Areas

  • Automotive Sealing Systems: Deep VOC reduction and odor elimination for high-standard automotive window seals, sunroof weatherstrips, and engine compartment dust covers.
  • New Energy & Electronics: Curing odor removal for EV battery pack seals and odor purification for high-end electronic device gaskets.
  • Building Materials & Eco-Cables: Eco-control for highly weather-resistant architectural door/window seals and eco-friendly TPV cable insulation jackets.

Usage Method

  • Adding Method: During the TPV dynamic vulcanization granulation process, feed it evenly alongside the EPDM/PP/oil blend at the initial stage of the twin-screw extruder (main feed or side feeder).
  • Processing Requirements: No pre-drying required; directly dry-blend at room temperature. Must ensure it participates in the entire high-temperature (>180°C) high-shear dynamic vulcanization process to trigger the in-situ anchoring mechanism of the homologous skeleton. Adding it too late will cause compatibility failure and severe blooming.

Reference Dosage

  • Recommended Dosage: Add at 0.5% - 1.0% of the total TPV material weight.
  • Starting Test Dosage: For standard automotive seals, it is recommended to start sampling at 0.6%. If the TPV is highly oil-extended or uses a heavy-odor phenolic resin curing system, increase to 0.8% for testing.

Precautions

  • Excellent System Compatibility: The active ingredients are chemically inert macromolecular metal salts and stable microporous skeletons with no redox activity. Fully compatible with mainstream peroxide or phenolic resin dynamic vulcanization systems, completely non-interfering with crosslinking kinetics.
  • Strict Moisture Protection: Features a high-surface-area catalytic bed sensitive to ambient humidity. Immediately tie the moisture-proof inner bag tightly after sampling to prevent occasional micro-bubbles if twin-screw venting is suboptimal due to moisture absorption.
