EPDM Deodorizer

Product Introduction

During processing, sulfur-cured EPDM releases pungent odors such as hydrogen sulfide, thiols, and polysulfides. Traditional polar deodorizers have poor compatibility in non-polar EPDM and oil-extended systems, easily causing surface "blooming" or visible "white spots" due to poor dispersion.

This composite deodorizer adopts a "melt-coating & in-situ anchoring" synergistic design. Under high-temperature and high-shear conditions in the internal mixer, the amphiphilic carrier melts instantly, dispersing and encapsulating the active deodorizing ingredients, eradicating the risk of white spots. Upon cooling, the carrier's long chains physically entangle with the EPDM 3D network, securely anchoring the odor-captured complexes deep within the matrix. This completely cuts off the outward migration path, granting the product excellent anti-blooming properties and a long-lasting dry surface.

Deodorizing Principle

  • High-Temperature Liquid-Phase Complexation: The core active salt transforms into a low-viscosity fluid during high-temp processing. Free metal ions actively complex with hydrogen sulfide and thiols, converting them into stable macromolecules via irreversible chemical bonding.
  • Melt Compatibility & In-situ Anchoring: The amphiphilic solid lubricating carrier melts first, acting as a compatibility bridge. After cooling, its non-polar long chains entangle tightly with rubber macromolecules, locking the complex deep in the cross-linked network to prevent physical precipitation.
  • Micro-Nano Pore Targeted Isolation: Ultrafine porous crystals act as physical sponges to intercept residual sulfur molecules. Simultaneously, along with nano-scale isolation powders, they prevent the active components from clumping due to moisture during storage.

Application Areas

  • Automotive NVH & Interiors: Odor removal for sulfur-cured EPDM foamed door seals, trunk weather strips deodorization, and anti-blooming treatments for hood sound insulation gaskets. Effectively lowers VOC emissions to meet strict automotive odor standards.
  • Construction & Home Materials: Odorless eco-friendly aluminum window foamed EPDM strips, anti-whitening and sulfur odor control for high-weatherability architectural curtain wall seals. Ensures optimal Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).
  • Industrial Pipes & Daily Rubber: Low VOC odorless washing machine water hoses, eco-friendly EPDM cable insulation, and sulfur (rotten egg) smell elimination for indoor stadium rubber floor mats. Keeps surfaces dry and enhances product value.

Usage Method

  • Adding Method: Add this product along with raw EPDM and main fillers (carbon black, silica) during the initial mixing stage (internal or open mill) to achieve preliminary dispersion via high shear. Must be mixed before adding sulfur and accelerators.
  • Mixing Requirements: Once the internal mixer reaches the set process temperature (must exceed 145°C to ensure full carrier melting), maintain mixing for 1.5-2 minutes. Then add processing oil, followed finally by the cross-linking system. For foamed products, ensure uniform dispersion before the blowing agent decomposes.

Reference Dosage

  • Foamed EPDM Products: Due to higher odor emission surface area, recommended dosage is 1.0% - 1.5% of the total rubber compound weight.
  • Solid EPDM Products: Recommended dosage is 0.5% - 1.0%.
  • Starting Test Dosage: For initial trials, it is recommended to start at 0.8%, adjusting based on odor reduction and surface dryness (checking for bloom).

Precautions

  • Highly moisture-absorbent. After opening, evacuate air, seal tightly, and store in a cool place.
  • If the mixing temperature does not reach above 140-145°C, incomplete melting and poor dispersion will occur.
  • Strictly prohibited from adding simultaneously with curing agents at the final stage to avoid interfering with curing rates.
